Prior to the advent of electronic transmissions and differentials, vehicles dominated by a central machine utilised an Engine Control Module. The PCM does everything that the ECM did, but networks the engine controls in with the transmission, rear-end and edifice figuring controls to provide for optimum action low all operative conditions.
